The market for biofiltration
  • A major market for updated biofiltration systems is the aquatic animal industry. In fact, many biofiltration companies were born from experiments surrounding improved water quality in fish tanks.

  • Another branch of biofiltration development is focused on the global water crisis. With people in many areas of the world lacking access to clean water, biofiltration is a relatively cheap and easy way to eliminate some of the toxins they would otherwise consume.

Moving biofiltration forward

  • Cost is a big factor in driving forth the development of biofiltration. Due to the low maintenance upkeep of bioswales and constructed wetlands, installing biofiltration systems seems to be a much more economical option than building large water treatment plants.

  • Environmental health is another big factor in biofiltration advancement. The urban world is growing faster than nature can handle and as such artificial methods for contaminant removal will be critical in protecting groundwater and soil nutrients.

Biofiltration in action

  • Product #1: BioFilter Systems’ QuikSand Delta Filter is “the most advanced...filter available.” The company’s main goal is to provide access to clean water for people in developing nations and the QuikSand technology can eliminate waste in water used for “[sewage], aquaculture, agriculture, and industry.”

  • Product #2: Bluewater Bio produces a biofiltration unit called FilterClear, which can be used for many applications but is targeted at desalinating water in areas where freshwater is scarce. The product has been successful at providing clean water at a university in Saudi Arabia, with little chemical runoff from the treatment itself and a high efficiency rate.

  • Product #3: The State of Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality puts out a brochure on the successful installation of bioswales, buffers, and wetlands. It has information on what to install where, how to do so, and maintenance guidance. The brochure is available for free on the internet and can be used by private citizens or governments.
